The 3D Classical Collection goes one step further: each track completely submerges the listener in the orchestral sound experience. What could be more exciting than to step into the midst of the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Road, with the young and talented Ben Gernon on the conductor’s podium? This new dimension in sound reproduction opens up creative perspectives that we look forward to exploring in the coming years

On 9th July 2020, Warner Classics launched the 3D Classical Collection – a spectacular playlist of 35 of the greatest classical tracks recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra & Choir and young British conductor Ben Gernon, exclusively through Amazon Music. The 3D Classical Collection was recorded at the prestigious Studio One at Abbey Road Studios where it was also mixed in Dolby Atmos. Listeners will be able to stream the 3D Classical Collection, and hear it in Dolby Atmos, when listening through Amazon Music’s high-quality streaming tier, Amazon Music HD, on Echo Studio. Dolby Atmos Music gives music more space and freedom, revealing what was lost with stereo recording. Thanks to this immersive audio technology developed by Dolby, listeners can experience the works of 26 supreme composers as if they were in the concert hall sitting alongside the London Philharmonic. Dolby Atmos will envelop listeners in sound, offering a truly immersive listening experience.

To experience the 3D Classical Collection in Dolby Atmos on Amazon Music, listeners will need a subscription to Amazon Music’s high quality streaming tier, Amazon Music HD, as well as Amazon’s latest groundbreaking high-fidelity smart speaker, the Echo Studio. With Amazon Music HD, customers have access to the highest quality listening experience available, including a growing catalog of 3D Audio, as well as more than 60 million songs available in High Definition (HD) and millions of songs in Ultra HD. When paired with an Echo Studio, customers will experience immersive audio, which brings listeners closer to their favorite artists and songs, allowing them to experience music the way artists intended it. With five built-in directional speakers, Echo Studio has been purposefully engineered to create premium sound with space, clarity, and depth.

Each of the 35 tracks is set in a soundscape attuned to the specific colours and moods of the music, which is best experienced on Amazon Music HD with Echo Studio

The music in the 3D Classical Collection spans four centuries, ranging from Bach, Handel and Vivaldi through Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Wagner and Verdi to Mahler, Elgar, Ravel, Prokofiev, Holst, Shostakovich and Barber. It encompasses moods from the intimate to the epic, the serene to the cataclysmic, the reflective to the rousing.

“Our aim has been to ensure that each track has the edge of live performance,” says conductor Ben Gernon, “to create the electrifying sensation of living inside the music.” Gernon, who was mentored by the late Sir Colin Davis, is Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and has also conducted such major orchestras as the Chicago Symphony, LA Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic and Oslo Philharmonic. The London Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1932, is one of the world's finest symphony orchestras, and is admired for its adventurous, forward-looking approach.

“Since the dawn of the music recording industry, the dream has always been to reproduce the classical concert experience as closely as possible,” says Bertrand Castellani, VP A&R Warner Classics & Erato. “The 3D Classical Collection goes one step further: each track completely submerges the listener in the orchestral sound experience. What could be more exciting than to step into the midst of the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Road, with the young and talented Ben Gernon on the conductor’s podium? This new dimension in sound reproduction opens up creative perspectives that we look forward to exploring in the coming years.”

Markus Petersen, Senior Vice President Warner Classics & Erato, adds: “With the 3D Classical Collection Warner Classics has produced an essential classical album that maintains the highest artistic standards while showcasing the full possibilities of Dolby Atmos. In recent years we have found Amazon Music’s listeners to be especially keen on classical music, and the arrival of Amazon Music HD in 2019 opened new horizons for them and for us. Quality of both performance and sound really matters to classical listeners. Here we have the London Philharmonic, an exciting and respected young conductor, a first-class production team, a legendary recording studio and, of course, some of the world’s greatest music. Together, in Dolby Atmos, they create the ultimate experience in immersive sound.”

Warner Classics’ programme of Dolby Atmos releases for Amazon Music HD also includes albums by some of its leading current artists, including Gautier Capuçon, Beatrice Rana, Vilde Frang, Bertrand Chamayou and Augustin Hadelich, and re-engineered sound recordings from its catalogue, featuring, among others Daniel Barenboim, Itzhak Perlman and Nikolaus Harnoncourt.
